“Another company, Mississippi’s Spread Networks, spent an estimated $300 million buying land and blasting tunnels to secretly excavate a straight route from an exchange data centre in Chicago to Nasdaq’s servers in New Jersey. In 2010 the company laid a fiber-optic cable that is 160 kilometres shorter, and 3 milliseconds faster, than the existing line.
